The size and power of the waves at the famed break of Nazaré simply can not be overstated. Listed in the Guinness World Records as the biggest waves ever surfed, big wave surfers from all over the world have converged at the Portuguese point break for decades in search of waves that reach heights of 80 feet — and higher.

Each winter, from November through March, all eyes are on the Atlantic Ocean, as big wave enthusiasts wait for the right swell to converge with the underwater Nazaré canyon; the meeting of ocean energy and rock that gives way to the otherworldly conditions worthy of the TUDOR Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge presented by Hurley.

“You could compare it to standing on top of a mountain looking down, but the difference is the mountain is moving. All your senses are heightened when you’re riding big waves. The feeling is surreal. It feels like everything that mattered on land doesn’t exist anymore. It’s a very freeing feeling.” — Kai Lenny

When the flag turns green, and the event is on, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, get hyped for the XXL action when you press play on Kai Lenny, Hurley’s very own big (and everything in between) wave surfer taking on the moving mountains of Nazaré.
