What inspires you to skate? I’m not sure what inspires me. I just feel the need to skate.
Who do you skate with? Louie Lopez (Goldie), Jake Anderson and anyone that calls.
If you could go on a skate trip anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would want to go to China with the Flip guys.
Name two things that are lame: People that chew loudly and my reaction to people that chew loudly.
Name two things that you love: My family and traveling with friends.
Things you wish you could do on skateboard: Every single flip trick that seems so hard for me right now.
Last Words: I have made really good friends and traveled to amazing places. I have gotten to do so many things that I never would have experienced if I was not a skateboarder.
Curren misses X Games medal by one spot
Hurley’s Curren Caples, the youngest ever competitor at X Games, finished fourth place last night behind Kevin Kowalski, Andy Macdonald and Pedro Barros respectively – a sign we’ll be seeing much more of Curren at X Games in coming years. But if you can’t wait for X Games 2011, make your way down to Huntington Beach this week for the Converse Coastal Carnage skate event, where Curren was runner-up in 2009. Full coverage and schedule of events for the 2010 US Open of Surfing are available at usopenofsurfing.com.
Check out the "making-of" video we took during the artists' latest collaborative effort.
Hurley resident artist Jason Maloney and graffiti wizard, Bigfoot, joined forces to create a 110-foot long by 20-foot tall spray-painted mural on the walls of 14-year-old skate prodigy Curren Caples' private skate park. Just in case you missed it live yesterday afternoon. Featuring Brett Simpson, Curren Caples and our two Israeli surfing champs. No gorillas were harmed in the filming of this episode.
We all know 13-year-old skate prodigy Curren Caples has a flawless "surf" style. But what most people don't know is that the Ventura resident is quickly becoming as skilled in the water as is he is on cement. For proof, check the results of the recent Volcom VQS event on Kauai, where Curren happened to be there on a family vacation and happened to enter the contest on a whim. "They let him in as a 'seventh man' in the first round," said his dad Evan. "He was skins."
But Curren squeaked through the first heat, made it through the second, then the semis. Before he knew it, he was up against some of the heaviest little big guns in the surf world: Ian Gentil and Koa Smith. Granted, it was waist-high, semi-walled Pine Trees. But Curren went out, clicked on a couple rights, and ended up winning the contest. He's now automatically qualified for the VQS Championships in Newport next May. Curren himself is pretty casual about it all and is quick to praise the talents of Gentil and Smith.
But we know what this could mean. With a little more time in the water (his skate schedule currently keeps him away from the ocean for weeks at a time), Curren could be the first legitimate skate/surf crossover star since the Dogtown days.
Keep checking those surf mags for the other "Curren."
