COSTA MESA, CA, — July 1, 2010 — After a brief hiatus, Hurley’s Rip My Shred Stick tour will return to the East Coast this summer. The eight-stop tour, which allows kids 16 and under to hang out with the Hurley team, test-drive their boards and compete in a no-pressure, all-fun surf event, will begin July 7 in Jacksonville Beach, FL and conclude on July 18 in New Jersey. “We’ve had so much fun with the Rip My Shred Stick tour in years past,” says Hurley’s VP of Marketing Pat O’Connell. “And there’s no better place than the East Coast to bring it back. I know our athletes are fired up to get out there and mix it up with the Right Coast’s next generation.”
In addition to the traditional Rip My Shred Stick surf event, the Phantom Truck will be on hand at every stop offering customized boardshorts, prizes and giveaways. The biggest event surrounding the truck will be our official East Coast Phantom with Nike Flywire launch at Ron Jon Surf Shop. There, participants will be able to trade in their old boardshorts, buy Flywires at half-price and be entered in a drawing for a trip to Kandui Resort in Indonesia with Rob Machado and the Hurley Team. So far, three other winners have been picked for the trip in October 2010. The event at Ron Jon will reveal the fourth lucky surfer to join Machado in Indo. “The Kandui resort is a special place,” says Machado. “I can’t wait to get out there and split a few peaks with these guys.”
More info on the sweepstakes can be found at www.hurley.com/upgrade. Regardless of whether you’re the Indo Dream Trip winner or a participant in one of the eight Rip My Shred Stick stops, we guarantee the experience will be unforgettable. Watch for the Phantom Truck and the Hurley Team to come rolling to a town near you starting July 7. For more info, go to www.hurley.com.

Moustache March raises $1000 for charity (and a few million in laughs). Photos: Michael Lallande
Hurley's had plenty of noteworthy celebs show up on campus. But when Prince, Dr. Phil, Mr. T, Hall and Oates, Gallagher, Cheech and Chong and Tom Cruise make an appearance on the same day, you know something special is happening. The awesomeness that is Moustache March got a whole lot awesomer this year with more and more dudes using that strip above their lip as a license to get freaky.
And man, did they get freaky. Wally Sato, Crawford. Smiley, Solow and Marsi. Bruce and Jorge. Prince. And Tom Cruise aka Aaron Belchere, all bringing down the house in their own special way.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without our Ambassador of Fun, Robby Adams, making it all happen and providing the bacon. (mmmm, bacon) On top of that, we raised almost $1,000 for the Orangewood Foundation.
Not a bad for an afternoon of shenanigans. Alas, all that fun must eventually come to an end. (Except for Weber and Valle, who will be wearing their side-effects for months.) Time to bust out those razors and start plotting for next year.

Watching from the sidelines on one of the biggest North Shore days in recent memory. By Pat O'Connell
Keep in mind that this day was a whole 'nother level from when we normally "hop on the ski." Closeout sets unfolded all the way from Backyards to Revelations. 30-footers were shutting down Waimea. And the mythical Outside Log Cabins, the place where Bradshaw rode the "biggest wave ever," was peeling like your local pointbreak — at about 200 feet. Maybe 250.
So Rob and I headed out there anyway. No intentions to surf it. Just like those ambulance chasers who drive around looking for accidents. We wanted to see waves that scared us. And wipeouts that made us scream. When we got out there, we were shocked to find almost no one around. Aamion was out there with the Malloys, and Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala were out, but that was about it. I guess everyone else was either at Waimea or Jaws.
The second you see one of these 30-foot proper sets wedge up at Outer Logs, you realize it's the best big wave in the world. Just 200 yards of vertical wall, peeling perfectly into deep water. And I was blown away at what Garrett and Kealii were doing out there. They had so much gear on they looked like superheroes. But they were surfing like superheroes, carving 60-foot faces like it was 6-foot Trestles. The Malloys also got some good ones, until Aamion got rolled on the Ski trying to save Chris. The chops were bigger than my beat-up Volvo station wagon out there.
Rob and I never did ride a wave and we didn't really care. We knew we didn't have the right equipment and weren't properly prepared. But just to see it all go down first hand was a privilege. I almost feel like I had some crazy big-wave session myself -- especially when we narrowly missed another huge closeout set on the way in.
While we were out there, we captured a few moments. Keep in mind that this is about the worst footage you'll ever see. I've watched higher-quality videos of Bigfoot and UFOs. But it'll at least give you an idea of the waves these guys rode today. Waves that will likely go down in history as some of the biggest of the decade. — Pat O

About a month ago, Pat O called and told me I was going to do some commentating on the webcast for the Hurley Pro at Tresles. I tried to wiggle my way out, but when Pat sets his mind to something there is no changing it. I was on my way to Cal. For most people this probably sounds fun. Hurley pays my way to the mainland, gives me great accommodations (Pat's couch), and Pat takes me out to dinner, lets me drink his wine and eat his ice cream.
All I have to do is bullshit about the best surfers in the world. I know this makes me sound like a puss, but talking on the web is scary. Let me go paddle in at Waimea, or do some dumb stunt, those are things I can handle. Walking into the webcast booth, that's intimidating.
Once I get going, it's all good, and then come the e-mails. In between questions and "Atta boy Brock" is the constructive criticism all the webcasters love. Stuff like "You're a kook," "I'm tired of Brock already" etc., all that crap tends to stick with you more than the love letters.
This year the waves were inconsistent, but I thought the contest was still insane. The level of pro surfing is so high. This was the first time in at least a decade, I walked away not sure who the best surfer in the world is. For me it's always been Kelly. This year, I thought a few of the guys had reached his level, or maybe he slipped a little. Could be his boards suck. Whatever, now I feel like Kelly's one of the best, with company.
Can't wait to webcast next year, if Kelly's on tour he'll prove me wrong. If he's retired, he'll e-mail me and call me a kook.—Brock
The Phantom Stretch fabric — first introduced in 2007 —has sparked a space race in the boardshort category, with a handful of companies pushing for the next quantum leap in lightness, stretchiness and overall performance. Fortunately, the original of these super-stretch boardshorts keeps evolving with the Phantom with Nike Flywire coming 11/27/09. Check out the primer here or, to buy your own pair of Phantoms, go to our store.
