We heard the swell was starting to pick up today so everyone was stoked to get an early wakeup call to get on it. It was decided to split up the Grom-group so that the regular footers could catch their rights and the goofy footers could score some lefts. The goofies, Evan Geiselman, Christian Saenz, and Parker Coffin trekked an hour from Canngu out to the Bingin, and another 20 minutes to scale down the treacherous vertical stairs that are carved into the hill leading down to the beach.
With scattered warungs, hostels, and traveling masseuses trying to stop you along the path it is easy to get lost in the maze-like village that was once a quiet little beach community. After a few hours of shredding, the boys needed some replenishment so we headed over to Uluwatu and watched some sets roll in while we ate some amazing egg, cheese, and avocado jaffels. It only took a few minutes for the food coma to set in before the boys to put their heads down for a quick power nap, (always keeping one eye on the waves), before heading out for their second session of the day.
With the swell picking up even more in the afternoon, young charger Parker Coffin dropped in on one of the biggest sets. Evan and Christian were showing off their talents with some huge fans, big barrels, and some endless racetracks. Since the swell was so big, Evan’s favorite wave, Racetracks, was not working as well as we had hoped so we hiked back out of Uluwatu and headed back to Bingin.
The other boys joined back up with us claiming to have scored it that morning at Kermas with overhead barrels and epic air sections. The boys paddled out together at Bingin for a super low tide session with heaving barrels for a little over an hour. Some came back with battle wounds from the shallow reef, all came back with smiles on their faces. — JZ
Young Canngu local surfer Jeron surfed an incredible event to be crowned runner-up at this years King of the Groms in Bali. The waves were super fun and the grom that arguably surfs more than anyone in the world stepped up over the last few days of competition to win every one of his heats, all the way up until the final where he was defeated by 16 year old, Sandi Slamet.
Keep in mind that Jeron is only 12 years old, 4 years younger than the winner. I am sure that Jeron will come back and win this thing... maybe even four times in a row!
Good work Jeron from all the crew at Hurley!
