Pt. Pleasant, New Jersey greeted us with some non-surfable conditions at sunrise, but it didn't stop all the groms down at the beach from having a good time. As we waited for the tide to drop, the kids competed in paddle board races, slip 'n' slide sliding, wheel barrel racing, dance-offs, corn dog contests and sandcastle building, which all made for some great laughs and good times. Once the tide dropped out and the waves improved all the kids took to the water where even more fun was had, as the 35 competitors gave it a go on the Hurley INT soft tops with the Hurley pros. In the end, it was Kelley Oekers who took home the win (he seems somewhat pleased with his result in the photo above) and a new GoPro Hero 2 HD camera, Phantom Create boardshorts, Spy sunglasses and other goodies from Freestyle, Futures, Stance Socks, Watermans, Mophie and Transworld! Stop number 16 of this year's RMSS tour touched down in Ship Bottom, New Jersey for some good fun with 80 of the area's best young surfers. Everyone snagged some amazing rides as they took the Hurley INT softtops out for spin with the Hurley pros. In the end it was the trio of Alli English, Brooke Kline and Gwyneth Constantino who finished in the top three spots. The best friends battled it out with some great dance moves and long rides all the way through into the shorebreak. Congrats to the girls and to all the other competitors on a job well done! The first RMSS stop of New Jersey landed us in the beautiful coastal town of Margate City with Heritage Shop Shop. Also meeting us in Margate City was a playful swell and 60 excited groms. The judges had their hands full all day as kids gave it all they had and came up with some creative and funky maneuvers. Congrats to the talented dynamic duo who took home the big win as they tandem surfed their way to a new GoPro camera, Phantom Create boardshorts, Spy sunglasses and some other goodies from Freestyle, Futures Stance Socks, Transworld and Watermans! 1st Street Jetty, Virginia Beach blessed stop number 14 of the Rip My Shred Stick Tour with perfect conditions and one foot waves, which allowed for some seriously creative wave riding. The 85 competitors embraced the not-so-serious judging criteria as they took to the water on the Hurley INT softtops for some board transfers, shakas and silliness. The entertainment out in the water came to peak when the bonus round final featured some of the best rides we've seen this tour. Congrats to Simon Hetrick on the big win! Yadin Nicol, Scotty Stopnik, Mitch Abshere, Noah Snyder, Punker Pat, Hula Hartley, PK and the rest of the RMSS crew stopped by Jesse Hines' Surfin' Spoon Frozen Yogurt shop for an OBX pit stop. A big thanks goes out to Jesse for the good times and tasty yogurt! For more information and to see when Rip My Shred Stick is stopping by your town go here. P.S. Yadin highly recommends going for the cake batter and rainbow sprinkles combo -- so be sure to keep that in mind next time you're on the Outer Banks.
A massive thunderstorm and strong winds the night prior brought choppy seas and a sweeping current to Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, Outer Banks for stop number 13 of our Rip My Shred Stick Summer Tour. All 45 competitors showed no fear as they headed straight into the intimidating shorebreak, surfed some amazing waves and took a ton of heavy wipeouts. We'd like to give a big, virtual high five to everyone who came out and gave the heavy conditions a go, especially Jordan Montgomery (pictured above), who surfed his way to the big win. Another great day of waves and surfing just went down in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, where a crew of young rippers met up with Brad Ettinger, Pat Towersey, Scotty Stopnik, Mitch Abshire and Noah Snyder for more RMSS action. The fun windswell on tap made for great rides and classic moments as some newcomers to surfing gave it a try and ended up catching the waves of their lives. In the end, it was the youngster, Brode Miller, who took home the much-deserved win with some heavy drops out the back and well-timed, critically thrown shakes on the inside. Congrats to Brode, and thanks to everyone else who stopped by to help make this event such a success! Another great day of surf and fun just went down in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, where 78 of Wrightsville's best young rippers met up with us to enjoy some of the better waves we've seen thus far. There were some great rides out the back, but the main show was on the inside shorebreak, which made for some crazy wipeouts and critical waves as all the competitors charged with no hesitation. In the end it was the sisterly duo of Madeline and Julie Eckel who stole the show and battled it out for the top two spots with some great long boarding and creative maneuvers ("creative" as in Madeline's coffin ride to 360 twirl, which ended up earning her the victory). Thanks to everyone for coming out and for keeping us entertained with the great surfing. Read on for results and click here for the download link to all of today's photos. Photos: PK
"This is the best Myrtle Beach I have ever seen" was what we we were told by the first few groups of groms and families that showed up to the beach today, just north of the Springmaid Beach Pier. So with the "best ever" claim already on our side, things got even better for this South Carolina RMSS stop as everyone went nuts in the two rounds of competition. With everything from cutbacks, carves and off-the-lips to fins-first takeoffs, head dips and dance moves, the judges had their work cut out for them. But after sifting through all the ripping and goofiness in the water, birthday boy, Dougie Wendel, was named the 2012 champ of Myrtle Beach. Thanks to everyone for coming out and for keeping us entertained with the great surfing. The coastal South Carolina town of Folly Beach treated us to another great event with everything we could have ever asked for -- perfect 1-3 ft surf for the kids, an endless supply of hot dogs from Jack's Cosmic Dogs and some of the best community support we've come across. The action in the water got pretty heated as the talented bunch of groms got creative and funky on all the Hurley surfboards. We saw a few triple-board-stack-rides, some headstands and even a few board transfers. In the end it was Wilson Brooks and his laid back style that earned himself the victory and a new GoPro camera, Phantom Create boardshorts, Spy sunglasses among other goodies from Mophie, Freestyle, Futures and Stance Socks. Congrats and well done to all of the Folly Beach competitors! Read on for results, click here for the highlight video and click here for the download link to all of today's photos.
