On Sunday, with the help of John John Florence and Carissa Moore, we kicked off the first Rip My Shred Stick event of the year, and hosted the Grand Reopening of their store in Lahaina, Maui. John John and Carissa paddled out with the kids and were joined by Bob Hurley and local Hawaiian teamriders Amion Goodwin, Kai Barger, Koa Smith, Evan Valiere and Joel Centeio. In an area that churns out surf legends regularly, it's not common to find a contest that places an emphasis on fun over competition. For the 50 kids in attendance, they had the chance to either show off their talents or just enjoy a day in the harbor with the pros.
The day was capped off with a party at the Hurley store on Front street, where Leilani's supplied pupus while John John showed his new movie and the teamriders signed autographs in the backyard. The groms were all smiles, because as our manager Dustin put it, "a little bit of aloha goes a long way."
Congrats to the winner of the Ripper division, Seth Nunez, and the winner of the Fun Division, Lehiwa Devault!
