Jason Maloney gave us a sneak peek of his Anti Canvas art along with some insight into the unique art show. Click through to hear his thoughts and whet your pallete a few weeks before the show, taking place in Honolulu on December 7th.
What's your role in the show?
I'm one of the participating artists in in the show and Seth McKinney from Hurley Hawaii hit me up and asked me if I could help him find a bunch of artists from the main land to include in the show.
How do you identify artists to include?
Some are friends but most are friends of Jennie Cotterill who works with me in the Hurley Art Department. She is our official Hurley Artist Outreach Coordinator and amazing talent herself who wrangled up the talent through her vast artist networking skills. Each artist we picked has a unique style and stands out amongst his or hers peers.
How does your approach change when you're asked to put something on a pair of boardshorts versus a canvas or a big empty wall?
Well, I just happened to finish this sick outdoor mural titled 'Bedtime Stories' with fellow artist friend Evan 'Stink' Rossell that covered the whole back side of the Wahoo's Fish Taco's off of Placentia Ave in Costa Mesa, Ca. Also, a photographer buddy of mine, Derek Bahn photographed the final piece. I loved it so much that I took the part that I painted which consisted of my huge elephant, 'Tippsy' and used that as my design. It worked out pretty good -- you can see all of the walls natural elements like doors, pipes, parking blocks, trash and electrical breaker boxes.
What's your favorite pair of board shorts to wear?
I personally like the Hurley 'Cool by the Pool' throw back board shorts.
Who's shorts are you getting excited to see?
I'm excited to see what CR Stecyk comes up with…that guy is amazing.
Besides the obvious fact that all art is on shorts, what else sets this art show apart from others?
It's a pretty unique art show in that the shorts will be auctioned off for a good cause, I picked my auction proceeds to go to the Pow Wow Hawaii charity which is a gathering of artists that engages with the broader community in the process and creation of art.
