It's been a long six months since Hurricane Sandy has made landfall — and the relief efforts are still going, and going strong thanks to Jon Rose and Waves for Water. Press play to relive one man's account of the storm and to see how Jon, along with locals, are rebuilding homes and lives on the east coast. One small way to help is with a purchase of one of our Hurley H2O Hurricane Sandy tees. All proceeds from these shirts go towards Jon and his relief initiative.
Jon Rose touched down in New Jersey this past Saturday and entered into a war zone… the pictures that we've seen look like a scene out of an apocalyptic movie. With the help of Sam Hammer, New Jersey surfing icon and chief Waves for Water volunteer, the team has made their way from Sea Side, NJ, to Staten Island, NY. The photos are both haunting and beautiful, showing altruism championing destruction. Click through to see through the lens of a Waves for Water volunteer in the face of Sandy's aftermath.
Rob Machado is at it again and back to school just in time for Laguna Beach High School's homecoming. He kicked off their annual assembly with some pretty epic tarp surfing alongside members of the new LBHS H2O club for the second Hydration Nation event. The kids capitalized on the foot traffic to the homecoming dance ticket booth, and used it as a place to sell water bottles and raise awareness (Rob signing autographs didn't hurt, either). And of course, just like at San Dieguito Academy, we unveiled some brand new water fountains. We’ll be letting you know how you can bring Hydration Nation to your school soon, so stay tuned and, most importantly, stay hydrated! Click through for more photos from our day at LBHS!
The Hurley bus, Conner Coffin, Beau Foster, Scotty Stopnik, Rachel Tilly and Punker Pat met 40 excited groms down at San Fernando Street for another day of RMSS fun. There was some serious talent out in the water as everything from 16-year-old rippers to our youngest ever competitor (1 year and 10 months) gave it a go on their favorite Hurley/Stacey short boards and INT soft tops. In the end it was Matthew Perrealt who took home the win with one of the longest waves ever ridden at Mission Beach -- which earned himself a first-place finish and new GoPro camera, Phantom Create boardshorts, Spy sunglasses and other goodies from FreeStyle, Mophie, Tranworld, Stance, Watermans and Futures. Read on for results and to see all the fun that went down at Hermosa Beach, and click here for the download link to all of the day's photos. Photos: PK.
Scavenger hunts, staying hydrated, good music and getting weird on Rob Machado's boards. It was yet another successful year for the Switchfoot Bro-Am. The weather exceeded iPhone forecasts with temperatures in the high 70s, a perfect little swell showed up, the Hurley H2O booth was working hard to keep the crowd hydrated and thousands of people enjoyed live music from San Diego favorite, Switchfoot. In the end, Team Dragon (Sean Marceron, Ted Navarro, Taylor Clark and Andrew Jacobson, headed up by coach Sean Taylor) had the best switch stance performance, taking home first place. A close second was the Hurley A team: Rob Machado, Josh Benjoya, Dane Zaun and Ethan Carlston. Thank you to Moonlight Beach and to the people of Encinitas for being such a great crowd — we can't wait for next year! To see the pledges from the H2O station, head to our Facebook.
Last weekend Rob Machado was interviewed as a part of a special focus in the LA Times highlighting our responsibility to conserve water and protect our oceans. Rob discusses some of the great projects he has done with Hurley H2O around the globe and our plans for the future. Check out the interview to learn easy ways you can make a big difference straight from Rob.
In honor of Earth Day, this Sunday, April 22, we thought we'd let our H2O product have the spotlight for a few minutes. You see, H2O product and Earth Day go hand in hand because when you buy any H2O product (and we've got lots of good options to choose from), 100% of profits go towards funding clean water programs. So don't be a dweeb, help celebrate Earth Day with a good looking pair of boardshorts or Beachriders. And sure, you're not chaining yourself to the rain forest in protest of deforestation, but if you're going to buy new trunks, you might as well buy the ones that can do some good. Happy Earth Day, we'll see you at the drum circle. Read on for our favorite H2O boardshorts and more.
Happy World Water Day. It’s been 12 months since last World Water Day and we sure have been busy. Along with our friend Jon Rose at Waves For Water, we’ve spanned the globe helping people get access to clean water. So enjoy our H2O year in review video, helped made more enjoyable by the sounds of Switchfoot, as we recap our efforts in Liberia, Afghanistan, Indonesia, the Amazon and Haiti. Also, if you're liking the sound of this exclusive acoustic Switchfoot track — which was recorded at the Hurley Studio — click here to find out how you can get it.
We're assigning some required reading for this week: the latest issue of Surfing Magazine. The issue features Jon Rose and crew's Waves For Water initiative as well as a recent trip to Liberia (where the crew demonstrates how water filters are more important than the boards, bags or forecast). The 10+ pages of coverage in one of the world's best surf magazines has provided some great exposure for Waves for Water and our H2O program. Read on for the goods…
"Being raised by hippie parents and choosing a career path as a pro-surfer, I had literally zero experience with the military before starting my work in Haiti. The closest I ever came to the military was trying to sneak my way on to Camp Pendleton in San Diego because of the good surf there. But now having logged some serious time with our armed forces in two countries, I can say with confidence that I am incredibly grateful for their service. It is moments like these that truly showcase the greatness in humanity."
