After a loss in the opening round of the World Junior at Narrabeen, Australia, Kai Barger has hit back with a win in the 2nd round.
The wind blown waves, around 2 to 3 feet, and Kai got 2 waves in the opening stages of the 25 minute heat. In the end, that's all it took for the victory. The waves are expected to get a little bigger over the next couple of days and I believe the increase in swell will only favor the young hawaiian. The contest is due to be on again tomorrow, so check back in for more updates then! Mitch Posted by Mitch Ross at 4:39 AM

If you weren't at Hurley's, Cut' N Peel Art Show, the first of many Cycle Zombie Art Shows, then you were defintly missing out on one of the best art shows that has gone on in a long time...well at least since the Un/Familiar Faces Art Show. There was amazing art work by 10 different artists, surfboards by City Fog's Cj Nelson and Brian Anderson and not to mention some amazing motorcycles that had some serious time and talent put into them. If it wasn't the amazing art that made the show so great, then it may have been the bands, The V-GUNS, The Cormans or The Black Tibetians and DJ Harpoon who brought a lot of life to the night. Either way thank you to everyone who came. It was everyone who came out who made it that much better of a night. Check out the photos from the event and see for yourself how rad Cut' N Peel was, have a great day everybody! - Meredith Posted by Michael Lallande at 7:32 PM

Australian FMG surfer Adrian Buchan also finishes 2008 on an excellent note. Not only did he make it into the semis at the prestigious Pipeline Masters, he also managed to move up one spot to finish 2008 ranked 6th on the WCT, his best year end result to date. “To end the year with a podium finish in real waves at Pipe is the icing on the cake”, says Adrian. “I love surfing over here in Hawaii. It’s such a different challenge to the rest of the tour. It’s a great feeling to have worked hard and achieved the goals that I set out to at the beginning of the year. I wanted to finish top ten and win an event. To achieve those things and also be a part of Kelly’s run at his incredible 9th world title has made it a special year. I’m now looking forward to a little break over Christmas and New Years to hang with my family and friends and freshen up for 09. But I can’t wait for pre-season and to start training and working on a few things for next year. I feel like I’ve got a really good platform now.” Adrian also commented on Marlon Lipke’s qualification. “It is great for the sport that Marlon is going to be on tour next year. Being the first German surfer on the WCT he’s going to bring a whole new fan base to the sport. Not only that, but I think a lot of people will be blown away by his power brand of surfing." “These were definitely the most emotionally draining weeks of my life”, said an unbelievably happy Marlon Lipke after he heard that he has qualified for the 2009 ASP World Tour. “I was ninth on the WQS (World Qualifying Series) going into Hawaii. At Haleiwa, the impossible happened, a record five guys needing results got results and I dropped back to 14th going into Sunset. The pressure of making two heats at Sunset was huge, and so were the waves! I think I surfed well and I really enjoyed the testing conditions... I just want to thank Pat O’Connell again for helping me out so much over there. I didn’t make the heat and Dave (Weare) and Phil (McDonald) overtook me; 16th after Sunset. I was really down. Tiago was my last chance and when he called to tell me that he was going to pull out of the Pipe event due to an injury, I thought to myself: how unlucky can I be, because I knew Tiago would have done anything to get me into the CT. I obviously understood his reasons and I sent him an email saying that he had to take care of his health first of all. However, it wasn’t easy. I was home saying to myself, well, I will probably be able to surf a few events as a replacement, which isn’t too bad either. And then the call on Friday night – “Marlon, you’re in!” I still can’t believe it… This is a dream come true!“

Congratulations to Edison Surf Team for beating long time rivals, Huntington Beach, twice to win the Sunset League Championship, which is the first time in 20+ years! We brought coffee and donuts to the entire team and also delivered their custom Hurley/Edison Surf Team hoodies. All the kids were stoked! Brett Simpson was also nice enough to offer up a surfboard to the kid with the best grades at the end of the year. One kid had a 4.6 GPA and is psyched to be in contention for this amazing prize. Its was that time of the year again for the annual King of the Peak at Sebastian Inlet, Florida. Michael Dunphy and I drove down from Jacksonville to try and win some skins. The first day went pretty well for me as I picked up three skins and was the leader for the day. It was really inconsistent and very hard to keep on getting a good wave each heat, so I think I got lucky to just get three. The second day was freezing cold, choppy chest high peaks. All the boys went down to watch an on-fire Cody Thompson. At least he was from my hometown, because he is the first person from jax to ever win the King of the Peak. Overall we had a great time hanging on the beach all weekend and cheering each other on. There is always next year!!! Posted by Asher Nolan at 9:16 AM
