howzit surf fiends
here's the haps for the week after another epic week in surf on the south shore, looks like we are in for some north shore action for the upcoming week. Overhead sets at the most popular spots on the S,W, and E shores from last Friday into Monday had surfers going nutz from Sandy Beach to Yokohama. In the meantime, shark sightings have been closing beaches from the Big Island to Oahu, the most recent today at Chun's and Lani's, and on the Big Island's NW shores. An actual shark attack happened at Crouching Lion area on the NE side of Oahu to my personal friend, Todd Murashige on Tuesday, Sept 9 at Razorbacks. Luckily he made it into shore after the horrifying experience and was helped in by another surfer who was out at the spot, Aren Souza. Todd kept his head and instructed Aren on what to do: wrap the wound, get help, etc, and it looks like Todd will keep the leg that was shredded, and is happy to be alive. He was admitted to Queen's and might be released soon to go home and mend..;.. for more details please go to Honoluluadvertiser.com. Todd says it was a tiger shark since he got up close enough to pry the shark's mouth from his leg...good luck Todd...and we love you. Congrats to Kelly Slater on yet another phenomenal win at the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley at Trestles! what a FREAK as all his friends call him...... locally, contest results for the latest HSA Kewalo's contest are as follows: Boys: Eala Stewart. Jr. Men: Keanu Asing. Men: Soleil Farnsworrth. Open: Matty Costa Girls: Hana Harrison Women: Dana Tortuga Menehune: Seth Moniz. Gran Master: Kal Faurot Longboard Men: Daniel Johansan. Stand up was won by Slater Trout. complete results at Hawaiisurfing association.org. Big wave surfer Ace (Alec) Cooke has been swimming around the island of Oahu to draw attention to the pollution issues affecting our island shores. Publicity stunt? whatever it takes to get people to pollute less, better.... he should be near his goal this weekend. hope he watches out for the sharks. ok gang, more next week aloha for now hhsh Posted by Michael Lallande at 3:13 PM

The boys had event on maui so we took the super ferry. What a deal, 3 people and a car round trip under $500. Luke and Makai went on the early morning ferry while Nohorai, Gabi and myself took the afternoon because Nohorai was in school. Gotta stay in school. While waiting in line for the ferry the Moniz Ohana pulled up. It was there first trip on the ferry as well. The ferry is great the views are beautiful. We went around the south side of molokai the up the channel to Kahalui Harbor. We got in just as it was getting dark. That first night we stayed at Kai Barger's house. Cool little set up he has. Friday morning we drove to Lahaina. Surf was small but forecasted to get bigger. It only got a few inches bigger by Sunday but it was great for the kids. Luke place 5th in Open Jrs. While Makai got a 6th in Explorer Boys. While in Lahaina I took the boys to the Hurley store to shake some babies and kiss some hands. The boys really like the store cuase it had product they had never seen they even made wish list. The last shot is the north side of Molokai. So beautiful.

Kai Barger took one of the biggest wins in his young career yesterday at the Macy's E Series Pro Jr event held at Queen's. This result will place Kai in a great position to qualify for the World Junior Championships in January. Kai's been working very hard lately, so stay tuned for a lot more big things from this kid in the future!

Mostly wind swells dominating the surf scene this week...small pulses on the North side at Lanis have disappeared and luckily everyone is surfed out from the big South swells a week ago. East side has all the wind-generated energy but even that is supposed to fade mid-week as those light and variables come in. Since I will be off island for a couple weeks I won't have results of the Freedom Surf Meet this weekend at Queen's in Waikiki until then. But I can tell you that the Local Motion Surf into Summer contest will be happening on Memorial Day weekend and the Hope Chapel contest in Waikiki that same weekend. Don't miss the HeavyWater Local Motion Surf into Summer kickoff party at Gordon Biersch on Saturday May 24 from 8pm-1:30am...Headliners will be Kapena with Lost at Sea and DJ Eskae of Nocturnal Sound Krew. This will be the happening of the summer cause more than 1,200 partiers showed up at the last Heavywater spring kickoff party, so don't miss it. This event will benefit AccesSurf Hawaii which helps people with disabilities get into the water to surf. And of course, don't miss out on the action in the actual surf meet at Ala Moana Bowls. Second Annual Reggae on the Rocks Music Festival, featuring international artists Da'Ville, Half Pint, Mad Cobra, and Freddie McGregor happens May 17 at the Waikiki Shell 2-10 pm. Wildly popular local artists, Ooklah the Moc will perform as well. ok gang, see you in a couple weeks, meanwhile, stay wet. aloha for now HHSH Posted by Michael Lallande at 3:52 AM

wassup surf stars here's the haps for the week. High surf advisories posted for the South shores with some solid 6 footers out at Diamond Head on Friday. Should hold through Saturday and then the energy switches to the North and NW sides with a new swell for those beaches. The Eastern shores have been enjoying some action as well with some solid 6' surf at Sandy's for a few days last week, now catching this South and the East is fading out. Lots more fun surf for the NW sides on tap and some residual Southern stuff as well. But you know when the high surf advisories for the South shores are posted, that means high kook advisories as well, so be careful out there.
Coming up Saturday, April 19 is the 7th Annual Ocean Sports and Fitness day out at Kailua's Kalama Beach Park starting at 8 am. This is a day of fun to share the ocean activities with disadvantaged youth and sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu. It will feature surfing and bodyboarding by the gang at Hawaiian Island Creations, canoe paddling by the Outrigger Canoe Club, beach volleyball with Dave Shoji and the UH Wahine volleyball team, and lunch for all the participants and volunteers. A good fun day of "giving back".
This weekend is the hugely successful and sold out Kokua Festival at the Waikiki Shell featuring Jack Johnson and friends along with Mason Jennings. Who knows who else will show up to jam with Jack and do so to bring awareness to our planet earth and what we can do to save it....or at least try to "go green". Those lucky enough to have tickets will start the party at 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.
Don't forget the 4/20 party at the Pipeline Cafe this Sunday with Pimpbot, Tavana, Wicked Blend, and more. Earth Day party starts at 7pm. 18 and older.
ok gang, that's it for this week, lots of parties going on, but lots of surf as well, so stay healthy and see you in the water. aloha for now hhsh Posted by Michael Lallande at 10:14 PM

Howzit guys hope all is well with you and yours....
here's that haps for the week The Steinlager Shaka Surf Series got off to a rip-roaring start on Saturday with some macking Sunset Beach. 8-10' waves with a treacherous side-off wind going up the faces for the longboarders and stand-uppers. Winning the Pro-am longboard was Ikaika Kalama. Kamu Auwae was second, and won the stand-up division, and also scored a beautiful color shot on his stand-up in the Advertiser taken by Bernie Baker. 3rd in the LB was Kai Sallas, with Koa Enriquez 4th. Equal fifth went to Duane DeSoto and Dino Miranda. 2nd in the stand-up went to Dave Parmenter, 3rd Leleo Kinimaka, and 4th, Noland Martin. Equal 5th were Kekoa Uemura and Brian Keaulana. The upcoming events will be held May 31-June 1 at Kaakao Park, with the 3rd in the series slated for Queen's June21-22. July 19-20 will be at Ala Moana Bowls, and wrapping up the series will be the Haleiwa event Sept. 13-14. The amateur division of the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series was held on Sunday, with waves in the 4-6' range, and lots of broken boards as Sunset showed her power.....The menehune division was won by Jackson Hollingsworth. Juniors went to Nelson Ahina. Legends was won by Soyu Kawamoto. Junior girls went to Megan Godinez, women's winner was Leah Dawson. A great turn-out to support 20-yr-old bodyboarder, Amber Wong who has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The party was at the home of Michelle and Haouli Reeves in Kuliouou last Saturday from 1-5 pm. HoneyGirl swimsuits was the title sponsor and had a great fashion show. The music was by Lost at Sea. Donations from lots of people in the community and the surf industry with raffles and prizes.....free massages and skin care demos made it a truly girly happening, but the boys came to see the girls, so it all worked out for everyone! Good luck to Amber. Posted by Michael Lallande at 2:20 PM

Wassup surf dogs.....
wacky weather this week, as Spring Break is pau, but some fun stuff last week. And looks like a big swell from the NNW approaching as this messed up NE is pounding those shores. Too bad the winds are cold and from the North with a NE flow, so conditions will be stormy.....look for the following week to be calmer. Spring Broke went off BIG time as over a thousand people tried to get in to the O Lounge for the party of the season last Saturday night. Thanks to JCut, Ocean Vodka, Hinano, T&C and Heavywater Mag, it was a bit TOO successful as hundreds were denied access to the venue. Those lucky and smart enough to come early were treated to VIP bars with FREE Hinano, Ocean Vodka, Monster Energy with fun and fashion on tap. The fashion show was the hottest I have ever seen with "real" looking models both guys and girls, and a fabulous high-energy Tahitian dance revue that got everyone revved up! The event benefited Surfing the Nations and HASA. Congrats for a successful and fun event ....look for the next one up in May....let you know the time and place. Don't forget the 1st and 3 rd Thursday of every month will be the "Social Club" at Next Door in Chinatown. Sponsored by the same high-energy guys, JCut, Cano Productions, Heavywater and Matty Liu along with AfterOurs. This Saturday, April 6th a beach cleanup will be featuring a trash bag filling contest with gift packs full of prizes by BayVI, Glaceau, DC shoes, Lost and Brazilian Showroom. Free drinks provided by Glaceau, and event tank tops will be provided while supplies last. Show up by 10 am at AlaMoana Beach Park...ocean side of the keyhole parking area, ewa of the tennis courts. The trash bag filling contest starts at 11:30 am. ok gang, see you next week aloha for now HHSH Posted by Michael Lallande at 12:00 PM

Howzit Spring breakers
And the line up has been full of Spring breakers riding the breakers all week. Good fun surf at Lani's and other NE spots with a small but intensely crowded South swell for one day, Wednesday of this week. Sorry to see the closing of the Local Motion Central store at the gateway to Waikiki. The building has been sold and Local Motion has not yet secured another location. They are still in Hawaii Kai and a small store in Waikiki Galleria, but the beautiful Central store will be hard to replace. Good luck to all. On Tuesday, the Ke Kaha Nalu Hanana O Ehukai bodysurfing Experience was held at Ehukai, Pipeline. It was about 2-3 feet, but the bodysurfers had a great fun time in this event sponsored by the North Shore Lifeguard Association. The winner was 29-year old pro bodyboarder from Puerto Rico, Miguel Feliciano. Kai Santos of Hawaii Kai was second. followed by Larry Russo, David Hubbard, Chris Baker and Mark Cunningham in the 6 place position. More than 40 body surfers participated with about a dozen lifeguards in the mix. The was also a rescue race that was won by the team of Mitch DeGeus and Mike McGill. The buzz around the lineup is the incredible win by Kelly Slater at the Bell's contest in Oz. He narrowly beat Bede Durbridge in the final......insane, Kelly. The highest placing Hawaii guy was Andy Irons. Coming up this weekend is a ton of Spring Break parties, the most happening of which will be the T&C HeavyWater magazine event at the O Lounge Saturday, March 29 benefiting Surfing the Nations and SurfRider Foundation. There will be free booze in the VIP areas sponsored by Hinano and Ocean Vodka. Party starts at 9pm. $10 cover. The NSSA Regional Champs are now official: Granger Larsen won the open men, with an all-Maui final which included Billy Kemper, Albee Layer, and Kai Barger in that order. Alessa Quizon won the open women, with Koa Smith taking the boys. Longboard winner was Kaoli Kahokuloa, and the Juniors was Tanner Hendrikson. Mini-groms had Imaikalani DeVault in first. Explorer division winners included: John John Florence, Jrs.; Kaimana Jaquias, Boys; Kai Barger, Men; Leila Hurst, Girls; Coco Ho, Women, Bullet Obra, Longboard; Seth Moniz, Menehune; Christian Budroe, Masters; Dale Sabate, Seniors, and Raymond Shito, Super Seniors. congrats to all the participants and to the surfers who get to go represent Hawaii in the NSSA Nationals in Cali...Also of mention are Monica Byrne-Wickey of Maui and Ry Cowan of Kauai who each received $2,500 college scholarships. Pro surfers gave free airfares to deserving surfers to enable them to fly up there. The pro who donated were Makua Rothman, Kekoa Cazimero, Mikey Bruneau, Fred Patacchia, Jason Shibata, Flynn Novak and Mikala Jones. Thanks for giving back, guys. And last, but not least....soon we will be seeing Primo Beer back on store shelves. It is already on tap in several establishments, including Wahoo's Tacos on Ward, and will be in mainstream stores soon. Surfers Shane Dorian and Brad Gerlach are pictured tasting the brew, and Keoni Watson is one of the taste-testers. Rusty Keaulana was sponsored by Primo back in the 90's and is destined to become an endorser again..... ok gang, aloha for now HHSH Posted by Michael Lallande at 2:07 PM
